Prominent writer, translator and editor Vijaya Chalise started writing at the age of twelve. He has made an eminent contribution to Nepali Literature and Journalism. He was born to Shushila Chalise and Ramesh Bikal, the classic author in Nepali Literature.
Vijaya Chalise, who has published more than three dozen Children’s literary arts, said in an interview with Ketaketi Online Children Magazine “One should give children the literature based on scientific awareness and social transformation. I have best focused on these topics in my writing. Nepali children’s literature has been seen as sluggish and weak lately. I felt that children’s literature is perceived as a genre of writing published just to sell to non-governmental organizations. This perception is weakening Nepali children’s literature. Thus, it is imperative that the creators have to be aware of it.”
Chalise was a distinguished personality in literature and journalism. The legendary author remained the editor-in-chief at Gorkhapartra Daily, the Nepalese government’s oldest newspaper, the editor-in-chief of Muna Balpatrika, and the executive chairman of Gorkhapatra Sansthan. He was also the founder chairman of Press Chautari Nepal. He has published three novels, seven collections of stories, and eight travelogues. In children’s literature, author Chalise is known as a creator who imparts scientific awareness, healthy entertainment, and innovative ideas to children.
He has been awarded numerous accolades which include Parijat Bal Sahitya Samman, Hridaya Chandra Sing Patrakarita Puraskar, Mahakavi Devkota Rastriya Puraskar and Chandranath Baristha Bal Shitya Lekhan Samman from the Children’s Literature Foundation Nepal (CLFN).
An iconic figure, Chalise was living in cordial care with his sons Arun and Alok, daughter Anju, and brother Mahendra Chalise, passed away on 16 Jestha 2082 at the age of 74.
The Ketaketi Media, Children’s Literature Foundation Nepal (CLFN) and SWAR PUBLICATION- Swar Biomonthly Magazine Family express profound sympathy and grief on this irrepressible demise of the brightening star of Nepali literature. Praying for the eternal peace of the soul, we dedicates this piece of art to him, who remained a lifelong member of our family.
